Salesforce is the world’s leading customer relationship management (CRM) platform. It helps companies find customers, sell to them, serve them and market to them, all in the cloud. It is often discussed alongside SAP and Oracle because large enterprises usually run Salesforce for customers and SAP or Oracle ERP for back-office operations, connected through integration.
Is Salesforce an ERP?
Not exactly. An ERP (like SAP S/4HANA or Oracle Fusion) runs internal operations: finance, procurement, manufacturing, inventory and HR. A CRM like Salesforce manages the customer-facing side: leads, opportunities, quotes, service cases and marketing. A typical flow: a sales rep closes a deal in Salesforce, and the order then flows into SAP or Oracle for delivery, invoicing and accounting.
A short history
Marc Benioff and co-founders started Salesforce in 1999 in San Francisco with a bold “No Software” campaign: business applications delivered over the internet instead of installed on servers. Salesforce helped popularise Software as a Service (SaaS) and later expanded through major acquisitions, including MuleSoft (2018), Tableau (2019), Slack (2021) and Informatica (completed in 2025).
