Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), launched on 1 May 2016 in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, provides deposit-free LPG connections to women from poor households, replacing smoky chulhas that harm health. Over 10 crore connections have been given under the scheme.

Eligibility
An adult woman (18+) from a poor household without an existing LPG connection, belonging to categories such as SC/ST households, PMAY-Gramin beneficiaries, Antyodaya Anna Yojana families, forest dwellers, most backward classes, tea and ex-tea garden tribes, island residents, or poor households under a 14-point declaration.
Documents required
- Aadhaar of the applicant and adult family members.
- Ration card or state document proving family composition.
- Bank account details (IFSC and account number).
- Address proof (or self-declaration for migrants).
- Passport-size photo.
How to apply
- Visit pmuy.gov.in and click “Apply for New Ujjwala 2.0 Connection”.
- Choose your oil company: Indane, Bharatgas or HP Gas.
- Select a nearby distributor.
- Fill the form and upload documents, or visit the distributor in person.
- After verification, the connection is installed.

Cooking with firewood and cow-dung cakes causes indoor air pollution linked to lung and eye diseases, especially for women and children. Clean LPG reduces smoke exposure and saves time spent collecting fuel.
