The Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand covers four sacred Himalayan shrines: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Lakhs of pilgrims make the journey every year between late April/May and October/November.

The four shrines
| Shrine | Deity | Altitude (approx.) | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yamunotri | Goddess Yamuna | 3,293 m | About 6 km trek from Janki Chatti |
| Gangotri | Goddess Ganga | 3,100 m | By road |
| Kedarnath | Lord Shiva (one of 12 Jyotirlingas) | 3,583 m | About 16-18 km trek from Gaurikund or helicopter |
| Badrinath | Lord Vishnu | 3,133 m | By road |
Traditional route
Pilgrims usually travel west to east: Haridwar/Rishikesh β Yamunotri β Gangotri β Kedarnath β Badrinath β back to Haridwar. A full yatra by road takes about 10-12 days.
Season and timings
Temples open around Akshaya Tritiya (April-May) and close for winter around Diwali/Bhai Dooj (October-November), when the deities are moved to winter seats. Avoid peak monsoon (July-August) when landslides are common.
Mandatory registration
All pilgrims must register online on the Uttarakhand Tourism registration portal or app before starting; registration counters are also available at key points. Carry the registration slip and ID. Kedarnath helicopter tickets are sold only through the official IRCTC HeliYatra portal; beware of fake booking websites.
