Your CIBIL score is a three-digit number from 300 to 900 that sums up how reliably you repay loans and credit cards. Banks check it before approving loans and deciding interest rates. TransUnion CIBIL is the best-known bureau; Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark also issue scores.

10 ways to improve your score

  1. Pay every EMI and card bill on time; set auto-pay.
  2. Keep credit card usage below about 30% of your limit.
  3. Never pay only the “minimum due” repeatedly.
  4. Do not apply for many loans or cards at once.
  5. Keep old credit cards open if they have no annual fee.
  6. Maintain a healthy mix of secured (home, auto) and unsecured loans.
  7. Avoid settling loans; “settled” status hurts scores.
  8. Check your report for errors and dispute them.
  9. Be careful when co-signing or being a guarantor.
  10. If you have no history, start with a secured credit card against an FD.

How to check your score for free

Each bureau must give you one free full credit report a year. You can also check through bank and fintech apps. Checking your own score is a “soft enquiry” and does not reduce it. Since January 2025, RBI rules require lenders to update credit information with bureaus at least every 15 days, so changes reflect faster.

How long does it take to improve?

Small improvements can show within a few months of on-time payments and lower card usage. Recovering from defaults or settlements can take a few years of good behaviour.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum CIBIL score for a home loan?

Many lenders prefer 750 or above for the best rates; some approve loans at lower scores with higher interest.

Does checking my CIBIL score reduce it?

No. Your own check is a soft enquiry; only lender enquiries when you apply count as hard enquiries.

How do I correct an error in my CIBIL report?

Raise a dispute on the bureau’s website with supporting documents; the bureau checks with the lender and updates the report.
