TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) means the payer cuts tax before paying you and deposits it with the government in your PAN. You then claim this credit when you file your return. Checking your TDS records avoids mismatches and notices.

Common TDS situations
| Payment | Who deducts | Key threshold/rate (2025-26 onwards) |
|---|---|---|
| Salary | Employer | As per your slab and chosen regime |
| Bank FD interest | Bank | 10% if interest exceeds βΉ50,000 a year (βΉ1 lakh for senior citizens) |
| Rent paid by individuals/HUFs not under audit | Tenant | 2% if rent exceeds βΉ50,000 per month |
| Professional fees | Client | 10% above βΉ50,000 a year |
| Dividends | Company/AMC | 10% above βΉ10,000 a year |
| Property purchase above βΉ50 lakh | Buyer | 1% |
If PAN is not provided, TDS is generally 20% or more. You can submit Form 15G (below 60) or 15H (60+) to the bank if your total income is below the taxable limit.
Form 16
Form 16 is the TDS certificate your employer issues every year by 15 June. Part A shows TDS deposited; Part B shows salary break-up, exemptions, deductions and tax computed. Use it to fill your ITR, but always cross-check with Form 26AS and AIS.
Form 26AS, AIS and TIS
| Statement | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Form 26AS | Tax credits: TDS, TCS, advance tax and self-assessment tax deposited against your PAN |
| AIS (Annual Information Statement) | All reported financial information: interest, dividends, share and mutual fund sales, rent, foreign remittances and more |
| TIS (Taxpayer Information Summary) | A category-wise summary of AIS used to pre-fill your ITR |
How to check them
- Log in to the income tax e-filing portal (incometax.gov.in).
- Go to e-File β Income Tax Returns β View Form 26AS, or open the AIS section.
- Download for the relevant year.
- Match with your Form 16, bank interest certificates and capital gains statements.
- If something is wrong, ask the deductor to correct its TDS return, or give feedback in AIS.
Under the new Income-tax Act, 2025
From 1 April 2026, TDS provisions are consolidated in a single section with tables, and form names and numbers are being updated. The principle stays the same: tax deducted on your income is credited to your PAN.
