With eight flexible arms, a talent for disguise and a remarkable brain, the octopus is one of the strangest and smartest animals on Earth. Here are 10 incredible facts about these ocean geniuses.

10 incredible facts about octopuses
1. They have three hearts
Two hearts pump blood through the gills, and a third pumps it around the rest of the body. Interestingly, the main heart stops beating when the octopus swims, which is one reason they prefer crawling.
2. Their blood is blue
Octopus blood uses a copper-based protein called haemocyanin to carry oxygen, instead of the iron-based haemoglobin in our blood. This makes it blue.
3. Their arms can “think”
An octopus has a central brain, but about two-thirds of its neurons are in its arms. Each arm can sense and react on its own, which is why people sometimes say octopuses have “nine brains”.
4. They are masters of disguise
Special skin cells let octopuses change colour, pattern and even skin texture in a fraction of a second to match rocks, coral or sand.
5. They can squeeze through tiny gaps
Octopuses have no bones. The only hard part of their body is the beak, so they can squeeze through any opening larger than it.
6. They use ink to escape
When threatened, many octopuses release a cloud of dark ink that confuses predators and can dull their sense of smell, giving the octopus time to jet away.
7. Some use tools
Veined octopuses have been filmed carrying coconut shell halves and later using them as shelters, one of the few examples of tool use among invertebrates.
8. Their suckers can taste
Octopus suckers are packed with chemical receptors, allowing them to “taste” what they touch.
9. They can regrow arms
If an octopus loses an arm to a predator, it can grow a new one.
10. Most live only one or two years
Despite their intelligence, most octopus species have short lives, often just one to two years. Many die soon after breeding.
Frequently asked questions
Are octopuses intelligent?
Yes. They can solve puzzles, open jars, learn by observation and escape from enclosures, and are considered among the most intelligent invertebrates.
What is the plural of octopus?
“Octopuses” is the most widely accepted plural in English. “Octopi” is common but based on a mistaken Latin ending.
Are octopuses found in India?
Yes, several species live in the coastal waters of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
