It pays for much of the media we enjoy for free, and it is carefully designed to influence us.

The goal of advertising

Make people aware of a product or brand.

Create interest and desire.

Persuade people to act: buy, sign up or visit.

Marketers often call this the AIDA model: Attention, Interest, Desire, Action.

Common techniques

Emotional appeal: ads connect products with happiness, family, love, fear or pride. People often decide with emotions and justify with logic.

Celebrity endorsement: a famous film star or cricketer makes us trust and remember a product.

Repetition and jingles: catchy tunes and slogans stick in memory.

Social proof: “Millions of happy customers” or “Bestseller” suggests everyone is buying it.

Scarcity and urgency: “Only 2 left!” or “Sale ends tonight” pushes quick decisions.

Bandwagon and aspiration: showing an attractive lifestyle you can join by buying.

Anchoring: showing a high “original” price so the discount looks bigger.

Online advertising

Digital ads use data such as searches, location, age and interests to show targeted ads. That is why an item you looked at may follow you around the internet. Influencer marketing, where creators promote products to their followers, has also grown rapidly.

Rules for advertisers in India

The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) sets a self-regulatory code against misleading ads, and influencers are expected to clearly disclose paid promotions. Consumer protection law also allows action against false or misleading claims.

Be a smarter consumer

Ask: “Do I need this, or does the ad just make me want it?”

Compare prices and read genuine reviews.

Look for “Ad”, “Sponsored” or “Paid partnership” labels.

Wait a day before big impulse purchases.

Advertisers use emotions, repetition, celebrities and data to influence what we buy.
