It began in Britain around 1760 and spread across Europe, North America and the world.

Why did it start in Britain?

Plentiful coal and iron.

Money from trade and colonies to invest.

Rivers, canals and ports for transport.

A growing population and new farming methods that freed workers for factories.

Key inventions

Spinning jenny (James Hargreaves) and water frame (Richard Arkwright): spun cotton thread much faster.

Steam engine: James Watt’s improvements made steam power efficient enough to run factories, mines and later trains and ships.

Power loom: mechanised weaving.

Railways: George Stephenson’s locomotives transformed transport in the early 19th century.

Telegraph: allowed messages to travel long distances almost instantly.

Effects on society

Urbanisation: people moved from villages to fast-growing cities.

New jobs in factories, but long hours, low pay and dangerous conditions, including child labour.

Over time, workers formed trade unions and laws improved working conditions.

Goods became cheaper and more widely available.

Pollution from burning coal increased sharply.

Impact on India

Cheap machine-made British cloth flooded Indian markets, badly hurting India’s famous handloom weavers and traditional industries. India was increasingly used as a source of raw materials such as cotton and indigo. At the same time, the British built railways, partly to move goods and troops. India’s first passenger train ran from Bombay to Thane on 16 April 1853.

Later waves

A Second Industrial Revolution in the late 19th century brought electricity, steel and the internal combustion engine.
