Its laws, roads, architecture and language still shape our lives today.

Founding

According to legend, Rome was founded in 753 BCE by twin brothers Romulus and Remus, said to have been raised by a she-wolf. Rome began as a small settlement on the River Tiber in Italy.

The Roman Republic (509–27 BCE)

After overthrowing their kings, Romans set up a republic, ruled by elected officials called consuls and an assembly called the Senate. During this period Rome conquered Italy, defeated Carthage in the Punic Wars and expanded around the Mediterranean.

Julius Caesar

The general Julius Caesar conquered Gaul (modern France) and took control of Rome. In 44 BCE he was assassinated by senators who feared he would become king.

The Roman Empire

Caesar’s heir, Octavian, defeated his rivals and in 27 BCE became Augustus, the first Roman emperor. The next two centuries, known as the Pax Romana (Roman Peace), were a time of relative stability. At its peak, the empire stretched from Britain to Egypt and Mesopotamia.

Roman achievements

Roads: more than 80,000 km of paved roads.

Aqueducts: channels carrying fresh water to cities.

Architecture: the Colosseum, the Pantheon with its giant concrete dome, and arches.

Law: Roman law influenced legal systems around the world.

Language: Latin gave rise to Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Romanian, and many English words.

Trade with India

Rome traded with southern India for pepper, spices, textiles and gems. Hoards of Roman coins have been found in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and ancient port sites such as Arikamedu show this connection.

Why did Rome fall?

The empire was split into Western and Eastern halves. The Western Empire fell in 476 CE because of political instability, economic troubles, overstretched borders and invasions. The Eastern Empire, called the Byzantine Empire, survived until its capital Constantinople fell in 1453.

From a small town on the Tiber to a vast empire, Rome shaped law, language and architecture across the world.
